Leeds as a tourist destination
By Emma Howarth
Leeds is a city that has changed termendously over the last 10 or so years, and is now being recognised as a place to visit for a weekend away, a hen weekend, having wonderful tourist attractions etc. Shopping Leeds has a really diverse shopping centre, ranging from bargain basement stores such as Poundstretcher and Primark to the Victoria Quarter which houses designers such as Coast, Ted Baker, Karen Millen and Kurt Geiger as well as the high-class department store Harvey Nicols. In between these are middle-range Oasis, Warehouse, Topshop and River Island among others. Parks There are many parks situated in Leeds, although not in the centre. Two of the largest are Roundhay park and Temple Newsam, both of which also hold events such as Opera in the Park throughout the year. There are many other smaller, local parks also situated round and about. Millennium Square, although not strictly a park is situated in Leeds City Centre by the Civic Hall, and is lovely for just sitting and watching the world go by. Museums and Galleries In the City Centre, we have Leeds Art Gallery, and the newly constructed Leeds City Museum, as well as the Royal Armouries nearby. In the suburbs of Leeds we also have Armley Mills Industrial Museum, and Kirkstall Abbey museum, which has lots of exciting attractions to interest young visitors. The abbey which gives its name to the museum is also nice to wander round on a summer's day with plenty of space for bikes or roller skates if they take your fancy! Eating and drinking At the cheaper end of the scale are places like Burger King, Pizza Hut and McDonalds, progressing to middle of the range Zizzi's, Pizza Express, Bella pasta and others. At the higher end of the scale there is Souz le nez, Anthony's and Brown's. With regards to drinking and nightlife, everything is pretty much priced the same. You can visit the Life Bar, Tiger Tiger, Revolution, Haha! and many others. |
