Information sources for information professionals

By Emma Howarth

Information resources can generally be divided into two types, legal resources, and business resources.

The legal resources are those that can be used as a legal point of reference, for example to find information on certain cases or look up a piece of legislation.

I am going to concentrate mainly on subscription-based online resources. There are hundreds to choose from, but I am going to concentrate on a few key ones.

The main source for finding legislation is Butterworths Direct. This is the only source of UK legislation as far as I am aware that updates the legislation, linking through to updated sections, as and when it changes, most others only link to it in its original form.

Butterworths Direct can also be used for searching information on many different areas such as taxation, corporate law, family law, where you can view the full text of works by key practitioners.

Two of the key sources for finding cases are Westlaw and Lawtel. As well as viewing the full text of cases, you can also search by a particular area to find lots of relevant cases on that subject.

With regards to business sources, one of the main sources for limited companies is Companies House. There is a free version where you can search basic information on a company, as well as a subscription based service called Companies House Direct. This allows you to view information such as accounts, directors, annual returns, and whether a company has gone into liquidation.

Dunn and Bradstreet is also a good general resource, as is Onesource.

With regards to finding press releases on a company, the main sources are Reuters and Factiva, of which you can save searches relating to a particular company for example and it will update your search as and when new material appears.
