Holidaying in Las Vegas

By Emma Howarth

We holidayed in Las Vegas last year, and it was one of the best holidays of our lives so far.

We stayed at the Bellagio, which is one of the more expensive hotels on the strip, but it was worth itto get the proper experience.

We arrived mid-day Las Vegas time, and it was easy enough to get a shuttle from the airport without having to book in advance, although it did take us a while to find them. A shuttle bus from the airport cost around $7 single, which we decided to do rather than get a return.

You are likely to find when you get to your hotel that the check-in desk is very busy, so it's worth checking how long it is likely to be before your room is ready, leave your bags there and go and explore for a bit.

A 10-hour flight does seem like a long time, so it is nice to stretch the legs a bit. You'll also find there's plenty of places along the strip in the form of mini-marts, selling food, drinks etc, and this is usually much cheaper than hotel prices.

One thing to remember though is that if you are gambling in hotels, waiters will approach you asking if you'd like a drink. We got into the habit of asking for water, but then saving it until we got outside into the heat again.

The hotel we stayed in was beautiful, with an indoor botanical garden, the fountains outside and floor to ceiling windows. There are plenty of cheaper options though which are still on the strip, some which stand out are New York New York, MGM Grand, and The Monte Carlo.

It's also worth noting that the strip takes you longer to walk than you think it will, so it's worth getting a day shuttle pass just in case. These only cost $10 and can be used from midnight to midnight so very good value for money.

We also had a trip to the Grand Canyon, which although expensive at £500 for two of us, did include a helicopter ride, coach there and back, breakfast and lunch, with a boat trip up the Colorado river as well, and was worth it. particularly the helicopter ride.

The trips vary, from a two hour return coach trip, to an overnight rodeo experience, eating with red indians, staying in a tent etc so you can alwaysd find one to suit your budget.
